Before the news cycle makes a mountain out of a molehill, let’s discuss.
US News changed its ranking methodology, putting a higher emphasis on social mobility and student outcomes. The drop in ranking for UF isn’t terribly concerning as it is a minor drop. But it’s of great interest to those of us who follow admissions trends.
Here’s why: UF has had an institutional priority of being Top 5 since President Kent Fuchs set the ambitious goal for the University in 2015. Now they must keep that position.
So why is this newsworthy for admissions counselors? What does this mean to applicants?
In all likelihood, UF's institutional priority of being Top 5 will require a renewed focus on upward social mobility. Admissions of talented students from under-resourced schools may take admission priority over equally talented students from wealthier programs. And UF has the resources to make that happen - they are one of the top public schools for alumni donations, allowing the school to meet more need for talented students.
So what’s my advice to students? This is a potential opportunity for students with lower socioeconomic status. And that’s exciting news.
For others? Well, there’s nothing you can do about it. But being aware of institutional priorities CAN help you manage your own expectations. Reach for the stars - but know plenty of talented kids get rejected for even more trivial reasons. It’s rarely - if ever - because you weren’t “good enough”.
As always, reach out if I can help!
