What is ‘scholarship displacement’? It’s when a school reduces the amount of aid initially offered to a student, due to additional outside scholarships earned by the student. (It’s the opposite of “stacking scholarships”.)
Why does it matter? Well, because if your student is working hard on scholarship applications, only to have the aid they were offered reduced, it’s frustrating and not worth the effort!
It’s important to know which schools “stack” and which “displace” at the beginning of the process - when creating a school list.
California recently passed a law to prohibit this practice - let’s hope other states follow suit.
